Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative processes to improve the emotional well-being and overall quality of life of an individual with a disability. If you think art therapy can help you or a loved one with a disability achieve your life goals, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can provide you with the right support.

There are various therapy services that the NDIS covers including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and exercise physiologist. But apart from these therapies, the NDIS also offers funds for other therapeutic supports such as arts therapy, music therapy, play therapy, and social skills training.

In order for the NDIS to fund art therapy, the NDIS participant must be able to prove that it is reasonable and necessary. Generally, if you can prove that a therapy will achieve the anticipated results and align with the goals and objectives in your NDIS plan, the NDIS should consider funding it.

is designed to help people with physical or mental disabilities address their condition in a healthy way. Given the numerous benefits of how it can positively impact the quality of life of each individual, arts therapy can be accessed as a supported service within the NDIS budget.

NDIS participants should establish life goals as an integral component of their NDIS plan. They will then be assessed by a registered NDIS provider so they can be allocated with NDIS funds to access art therapy services. This funding can be managed in three ways - NDIA managed, plan managed, or self-managed.

After the assessment, the NDIS allocates a budget that is intended to support their life goals. Participants can then use this budget to access a variety of services and supports, such as creative arts therapies conducted by mental health professionals or qualified art therapists.

Art therapy is a form of therapy that aims to improve the mental health and well-being of individuals on the autism spectrum through the creative process of art making. It is a type of psychotherapy that utilises various mediums of art such as drawing, painting, sculpting and other artistic expressions to facilitate self-expression in a safe environment.

What is the link between art and autism?

Art is not only a creative outlet to express emotions, but it also serves as an effective means to self-soothe. Individuals who have autism spectrum disorders find art as a great way to explore their emotions, develop communication skills, and practice self-regulation all while having fun.

Often, people with autism get anxious when faced with situations where social interactions and face-to-face conversations are involved. This is because they cannot process their thoughts and emotions properly.

To address this, art allowed them to express themselves creatively and communicate better with others. Art therapists suggest that instead of focusing on the artwork, people should focus on the creative process itself.

How can art therapy help individuals with autism?

Art therapy serves as a powerful tool to encourage self-expression among individuals with autism spectrum disorders. It aids in one's emotional processing and understanding of one's environment, helping them to develop life skills and offering them new viewpoints in life.

Children and individuals on the autism spectrum have unique abilities, skills, talents, and personalities. With art therapy being highly subjective, each individual is given the opportunity to explore these aspects at their own pace. As tailored interventions yield the greatest impact by aligning with each child's unique attributes, individuals with autism spectrum disorders can grow and develop without pressure.

For individuals with autism spectrum disorder, art therapy provides a safe space where they can freely express their thoughts and feelings. While each person's journey is unique, art therapy can help individuals on the spectrum gain greater self-awareness, build relationships with others, develop problem-solving skills, and express their emotions in healthy ways.

The job of an art therapist is to provide these individuals with the tools they need to cope with their emotions. As they learn to express themselves, they can gradually work towards their issues and problem behaviors in a supported space. Over time, this development will not only benefit them but also enhance their relationships with their peers and family members.

Sensory art therapy consists of various art activities that involve the five senses such as sense of sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Based on neuroscientific research and psychological theory, sensory art therapy aims to strengthen and develop an individual's sense of self by providing them with a variety of sensory play activities.

In several studies, sensory art therapy has been proven to promote brain changes associated with improved attention and cognition. Most individuals who undergo sensory art therapy have exhibited noteworthy progress in terms of their emotional awareness, communication, coping abilities, creative thinking, and sensory processing.

How do you teach art to children with autism?

Teaching art to autistic children requires patience and an adaptable approach. Here are some strategies to consider:

          Motivate them

Never underestimate a child's potential just because of their behaviour or verbal skills. Instead, motivate them to express themselves freely through art. Provide instructions or explanations as needed to help them understand the task. Make sure it is fun and engaging, and commend their accomplishments from time to time.

Give a head start

Whether your child shows interest in music or arts, you have to get them started early on so they can develop their skills early as well. Start introducing them to music and art activities. Let them engage in these activities as early as possible so they can explore their creative side and learn more about it.

Take advantage of art therapy programs

Look for art programs in your area so your child can get started on building a foundation in art. Take advantage of this opportunity and allow them to participate and engage in activities that can help boost their potential as well as develop their overall well-being.

          Provide art materials

Part of introducing art to your children is providing them with the necessary tools to start putting art into practice. Whether it's a musical instrument or art supplies, these materials are essential for them to explore and discover more about art and their skills.

           Takeaway

Most people with autism struggle with social and verbal communication, whether it be understanding facial expressions, body language, or engaging in social interactions. Not only do these issues make it difficult for them to accomplish everyday tasks, but they also hinder their ability to build relationships.

With art therapy, they are provided with a unique approach to navigate these challenges without having to use words. The use of artistic media in art therapy provides individuals with autism spectrum disorder a non-verbal outlet to express their feelings and concerns in a manner that's convenient for them.

Art therapy focuses on the therapeutic process itself rather than the final art or product. By engaging in activities such as finger painting, clay modelling, dancing, and other sensory activities, people with autism can have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into their behaviours, which can be utilised to enhance their self-regulation skills.

At Alive4Life, we are dedicated to helping individuals with autism spectrum disorder explore their emotional and psychological needs through art therapy. With our compassionate guidance and support, we assist in creating a safe space for them to express themselves freely, soothe their anxiety, and develop overall self-esteem.

          1. Emotional release

Art therapy provides a healthy outlet through which people with autism can easily express and release all their emotions, including those like sadness, anger, or fear, which they may find challenging to convey. With the help of a professional art therapist, they can enhance their emotional well-being and be able to express themselves without fear of judgment.

2. Boost self-esteem

Finishing a task no matter how big or small it may be provides a sense of accomplishment. Through art therapy, people with autism can boost their self-esteem and confidence as they engage their creative aspect to make decisions about colour selection and use various art materials in their unique visual creations.

3. Self-discovery

People with autism can truly explore and discover themselves through self-expression. Art-making can assist them in recognising and acknowledging the emotions that have been concealed in their subconscious mind. This type of therapy enables them to utilise their cognitive strength for communication through artistic media.

4. Stress relief

Art therapy has been proven to promote joy and satisfaction among people on the autism spectrum. The creative process that is involved in art therapy provides a way for people with autism to feel a sense of relief as they express their emotions and feelings. Hence, art therapists have observed lower levels of trauma, anxiety, and depression among their clients.

5. Improved cognitive function

Creative arts activities such as drawing, painting, sculpting, etc., involve individuals with autism to think of ideas, decide on a structure for their work and then use their senses to create the art itself. By engaging in arts therapy, they are able to stimulate their cognitive abilities that can further enhance their capacity to adapt to daily situations.

6. Enhanced communication skills

People with autism tend to repeat words constantly without meaning. Art therapists assist these individuals to develop their verbal communication skills through art making. By using symbols, colours, textures and shapes to communicate their thoughts and feelings, they can express themselves in more meaningful ways.

7. Improved fine motor skills

Art therapy facilitates the improvement of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination among individuals with autism by engaging them in various art activities such as mixing colours and exploring new art materials. Based on several findings, art therapy helps reduce stereotypic movements and improves overall coordination of the hands, fingers, and the body as a whole.

8. Better social skills

Art therapy basically allows individuals on the autism spectrum to express themselves without judgment from their parents, peers, and art therapist. It also provides children with the opportunity to embrace each person's uniqueness. Furthermore, simple interactions with an art therapist can improve one's social interaction, allowing them to develop better social skills and form healthy relationships with others.

9. Increased sense of control

When a person with autism creates art, it provides them with a sense of control and empowerment as they choose their own materials and express themselves in a way that is comfortable to them. Through art, they can take over and manage their inner thoughts and feelings more effectively.

          Finger Painting

Aside from promoting healthy self-expression, the process of creating something either through drawing or painting is proven to boost self-confidence among children and individuals on the autism spectrum. In this approach, art therapists encourage participants to use their fingers when painting not only to strengthen finger and hand muscles but also to develop fine motor skills as well as help them with sensory integration.

for many individuals on the autism spectrum. Just like anyone else, music is an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety. As such, it can be used as a tool to help children with autism relax and focus on a task that they find difficult.

          Dancing

Dancing to the rhythm and beats of music can help individuals with autism become more comfortable with their bodies. Since most people with autism spectrum disorder find it difficult to read facial expressions and body language, this type of art therapy can help them improve in these aspects. Through various body movements, dance enables them to convey stories or express thoughts that they cannot easily put into words.

Sand art is a form of sensory art therapy that uses the texture of sand to help children self-regulate. By manipulating a variety of different colours and textures, individuals on the autism spectrum can enjoyably express their creativity while learning to focus on one task at a time.

People on the autism spectrum get distracted easily because they find it hard to identify which task is more important. In simple terms, having an autism spectrum disorder may lead to difficulties with attention and focus. Through clay modeling and playdough sculpting, children and individuals on the autism spectrum can improve their concentration, focus and creative development.

          Pretend Play

One of the most common goals of art therapy is to foster resilience and redirect self-stimulating behavior and repetitive patterns through pretend play. During this type of play, a child's imagination is stimulated, helping them to develop creative skills that will help improve their problem-solving abilities.

Often, breaking repetitive patterns is incredibly challenging for children on the autism spectrum. Incorporating building blocks and building tools into their art activities can help them be motivated to try out new things and nurture their creative skills as well as hone their problem-solving abilities.

Psychology deals with a more complex understanding of the human mind and its role in influencing human behaviour and overall mental health and well-being. While counselling does not diagnose mental illness and other complex mental health issues, psychology examines these areas and their underlying causes to develop a specialised mental health treatment plan to address each of them.

In a psychology therapy session, the psychologist uses psychometric testing and other specialised clinical assessments to identify the main causes of the issue before prescribing a treatment plan. With the intervention of trained psychologists and mental health professionals, certain

While counselling typically provides short-term solutions to reduce stress and anxiety or to help a person get through immediate and practical issues, psychology is more focused on long-term changes, particularly for individuals who have severe mental health conditions.

Counsellors undergo training to offer support and guidance to specific individuals and groups. If you find yourself in any of the following situations, seeking assistance from a counsellor is the recommended course of action.

On the contrary, if you are facing challenges that are related to severe mental health problems like depression, anxiety, or stress, seeking assistance from a registered psychologist is the better choice. Their advanced education enables them to effectively treat your symptoms and, if necessary, provide a diagnosis. For more severe psychotic episodes, it is better to see both psychiatrists and counselling psychologists.

What is the difference between psychotherapy and psychology?

Although psychotherapy and psychology are related fields, there is an important distinction between the two. Psychotherapy involves talking to a trained therapist about mental concerns and seeking advice or support in order to help an individual manage their thoughts and behaviours. It aims to enhance an individual's well-being by addressing a range of emotional and psychological concerns.

Psychology, on the other hand, focuses on understanding human behaviour and how the mind works. It is a diverse field of study that covers different subfields such as clinical psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and cognitive psychology. In this field, psychologists use scientific methods to explore questions about a wide range of topics related to the human mind and behaviour.

It is important to note that while a psychologist can be trained to practice psychotherapy, a psychotherapist is not a psychologist.

The difference between a counsellor and a psychologist lies primarily in their level of skills, certifications, and patient care.

Counselling and psychology are two distinct fields that aim to provide therapeutic support to individuals who are experiencing various challenges or issues in their daily lives. While counsellors can only offer guidance and support, psychologists are equipped to diagnose complex mental conditions and provide evidence-based psychological treatments.

For individuals going through such challenges, the help of a professional counsellor or psychologist is crucial for them to be able to cope with their struggles and move forward in life. Whether it be short-term therapy or long-term treatment, the support provided by these professionals will significantly impact their overall quality of life. Nevertheless, it is important to note that although they intervene with such treatments, counsellors and psychologists are not qualified to prescribe medication.

Counselling is generally focused on helping an individual cope with life's struggles by talking about their feelings and thoughts on why they are feeling such a way. It often deals with the individual’s specific situation and focuses on working toward solutions to these problems.

During a counselling session, clients are given the safe environment they need to talk openly about their struggles to a trained counsellor who listens and helps them address these practical issues. Instead of undergoing treatment plans, counselling uses talk therapy to help individuals understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Most counsellors work with individuals and groups wherein they deal with such experiences to connect effectively with their patients. Thus, for them to be able to do this, they must possess

. Effective communication skills, attentive listening, and strong interpersonal skills are essential qualities that counsellors, therapists, and psychologists must possess.

But while these are important skills that both a counsellor and psychologist must have, psychologists require a high level of cognitive and analytical skills to research, diagnose disorders, and be able to provide evidence-based treatments.

While counsellors may or may not be required to obtain a license, many professionals complete an undergraduate degree and supervised practice to fulfill the licensing requirements set by the state.

In addition, certain certifications in counselling may not also require an associate degree. For substance abuse counsellors, most of them are required to have an associate degree or combination of college credits, professional seminars, and work experience in the field of addictions.

On the other hand, every psychologist must possess a doctoral degree with most practitioners required to complete a 3-4 year PhD, Ed.D., or Psy.D. program. These doctoral degrees in psychology require a prior undergraduate degree and a postgraduate degree, along with some relevant professional experience. Alongside 1-2 years of supervised experience, psychologists are usually required to pursue advanced certification or continue their education to maintain their licenses.

Do you have a family member or acquaintance who needs help with managing challenging behaviours? As a parent or carer of people with disabilities and mental health conditions, you know how challenging it is to manage difficult behaviour. Fortunately, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) can help you create an appropriate environment, teach effective behaviour management strategies, and develop individualised support plans for them.

In this article, we will define what is positive behaviour support and how it can help people with disabilities manage their challenging behaviours so they can live a fulfilling and meaningful life.

A perfect example of positive behaviour support is teaching an individual how to manage their anger when faced with a difficult or frustrating situation. For instance, a person who has a disability may suddenly become angry when asked to do a task he or she finds difficult.

In this instance, make sure that you talk to him or her in a calm voice and guide the person patiently during the task. Positive behaviour support helps individuals learn how to manage their emotions and respond more appropriately through structured routines, rewards and recognition, positive reinforcements, self-monitoring, and more. Ultimately, these techniques help the person learn how to self-regulate their emotions in difficult situations.

It is important to remember that when it comes to behavioural support, the focus should be on helping the individual understand why they are feeling a particular way. You can even teach some breathing techniques or provide fidgety activities to keep them busy. After he or she has completed the task, provide positive reinforcement and praise by saying something encouraging. Encouraging positive behaviour will contribute to the development of their confidence and self-esteem, fostering a cycle of positive behaviour.

What is the primary aim of Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive behaviour support aims to manage challenging behaviours and enhance a person's quality of life by teaching them coping strategies and promoting positive communication and social skills. This can be done through the use of positive reinforcement, change of environment, and other appropriate interventions. The goal is to develop a safe environment where the person can thrive and reach their potential.

Unlike other traditional methods, the primary goal of positive behaviour support is not to fix the challenging behaviour itself, but to provide support, implement strategies and develop better coping skills to manage challenging behaviours more effectively. Basically, positive behaviour support is based upon the principle that if you can teach an individual a more efficient and socially acceptable behaviour, then the challenging behaviour will diminish.

What are the main elements in a Positive Behaviour Support Plan?

Positive Behaviour Support Plan involves developing and implementing targeted interventions such as social skills training and individualised behaviour support plan to address the needs of individuals who may be at risk of developing challenging behaviour.

This is where functional behaviour assessment is conducted to help identify and understand the triggers of the challenging behaviour. This process involves conducting interviews and observations to gather information about the person's behaviour.

The goal of this assessment is to identify and provide the necessary support an individual needs to reduce and manage his or her challenging behaviour. It also strives to minimise or eliminate the use of restrictive practices through these simple strategies.

What are the Positive Behaviour Support strategies?

Positive strategies are focused on preventing challenging behaviour before it occurs. It involves strategies that are based on an individual's unique needs and abilities. This type of approach is best suited to create an environment where the person can kept away from harm.

Technically, these strategies are not intended to treat a person's challenging behaviour but they provide safe and ethical responses before the behaviour takes place. As included in the PBS plan, this include:

What are the principles of Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive behaviour support involves making changes to a person's environment and developing his or her skills to help manage their behaviour positively, maximise opportunities to achieve positive change and outcomes, and eliminate the need for restrictive practices. In line with this, the principles of the Positive Behaviour Support focus on the following:

           Person-centered

This approach places the individual (or child) at the core, ensuring that their life goals and aspirations are the central focus.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) offers a valuable approach for effectively managing challenging behaviour in individuals with disabilities. Challenging behaviours come in many different forms, and in worst cases, people who have it may exhibit aggression and cause harm. These behaviours can have significant impacts not only to the individuals themselves but also on their parents, family members, support workers, and everyone around them.

By implementing a positive behaviour support plan, people with disabilities and those with mental health conditions can increase their quality of life while reducing the risk of engaging in disruptive behaviours. This approach enables them to live their lives independently and safely without having to worry about difficult situations that may arise due to these behaviours. Consequently, they can achieve their desired goals and lead an enhanced quality of life.

Positive behaviour support (PBS) is a person-centred approach that parents, carers, and behaviour support practitioners use to provide the right support to people with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and those with mental health conditions who are experiencing or at risk of exhibiting challenging behaviours. Rooted in evidence-based practices, positive behavioural support ensures that the support provided is backed up by reliable research and proven positive strategies.
Challenging behaviour is basically

persistent behaviour causing significant difficulties and limitations

that affect a person's well-being and impedes their ability to lead a meaningful life. Regardless of the circumstances, challenging behaviour occurs due to the influence of three distinct elements.
past experiences and learnings

thoughts and behaviours of their family members, relatives, and peers

home environment, community, and cultural practices

Although positive behaviour support addresses each of these areas, most people with disabilities find themselves in situations where they are unable to cope positively with the demands placed upon them.Positive behaviour support focuses on understanding the reasons behind challenging behaviours and then developing tailored interventions to help the individual manage and cope with these negative behaviours.

Mental health plays a significant role in a person's quality of life. Just like physical health, one's mental health should also be taken care of seriously. People with mental health conditions often face a variety of challenges in their lives, from managing daily tasks to being active in the community. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help those with mental health conditions cope and find support.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to enable people with disabilities to increase their autonomy and full engagement in the community, at work, and generally in their daily lives.

As per the NDIS guidelines, an NDIS participant with a mental illness may be eligible for NDIS support if their mental health conditions significantly impact their daily activities, social participation, or employment opportunities. Hence, the NDIS provides support and funding for a range of services, including therapy and counseling, medications, rehabilitation, and community participation activities.

The NDIS provides support services aimed at assisting individuals with mental health issues and psychosocial disability to perform everyday tasks with ease. These services are designed to facilitate community participation, social life, studies, and work. They also help in regaining lost skills, boosting confidence, and settling back into regular daily routines.

Psychosocial disability refers to a type of disability that results when a person has a mental health condition. Psychosocial disability is not always present in people with mental health conditions, but when it is, it can be severe, persistent, and have an impact on a person's ability to rehabilitate. Thus, people with disabilities brought on by mental illness may be eligible for the NDIS.

           Does PTSD qualify for NDIS?

As mentioned, the NDIS may be available to people with disabilities brought on by mental illness. This means that if a person has post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is caused by a psychosocial disability that will probably follow him/her for the rest of his/her life and has a significant impact on their capacity to handle everyday tasks and activities, then that person is qualified for the NDIS.

However, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is only interested in the help needed as a result of the condition and how it affects the person's day-to-day functioning, not the PTSD diagnosis itself.

What mental health conditions are covered by NDIS?

The NDIS only provides access to an eligible individual with psychosocial disability as a result of a mental health condition.
If you have a mental health condition, you may qualify for an NDIS only if you provide evidence that:
your mental health condition has greatly affected your daily living

the struggles you faced as a result of your mental health conditions means that you would require an NDIS support in your entire life

the difficulties you experience as a result of your mental health condition has significantly decreased your ability to perform your daily tasks. These may include moving around, conversing, interacting with others, learning, and performing self-care or self-management duties

Bipolar disorder can only qualify for the NDIS if it meets the NDIS eligibility criteria. The NDIS provides support for people with permanent and significant disabilities that affect how they live and do tasks daily to achieve their goals. However, since each person's condition is different, the eligibility for NDIS support is determined based on a careful assessment of an individual's needs and circumstances. Hence, it is best to work with a healthcare professional to help assess if your condition is eligible for the NDIS.

Adult sensory activities are those that appeal to any of the five senses. Sensory activities are terrific method for adults with disabilities to engage with their surroundings while providing a calm and soothing environment. The idea is to help them feel protected and provide discussion starters that can assist ease their communication challenges.

Language matters so make sure to be inclusive of your word choices. Before asking them out, be mindful of how they want to be communicated. Be aware that individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities may communicate in different ways.

By fostering a good social environment and maintaining the facilities well-organised, people with disabilities can easily feel safe and welcomed in the community. Make sure the place is accessible especially to those with mobility issues. Seats and wheelchairs should be available for everyone particularly during activities where most attendees will be standing.

Be selective of which activities are fit for their condition. If people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are involved, you might want to try activities that can help develop their mental and physical potential such as exercise and sports. These may include activities such as bowling, workout courses, gardening, creating art, team sports, dancing, and swimming.

For individuals with disabilities affecting motor skills, sensory activities are excellent for enhancing their balance, spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination. By simply taking a walk, they can explore and learn about the new sights, sounds, and textures of their surroundings.
