So, What Is Support Coordination?

Support coordination is a funded NDIS support. Its purpose is to help participants understand their NDIS plan and put it into action. A support coordinator works with you to connect with the right services, manage your supports, and move closer to your goals. It's one of the most valuable forms of assistance available to people living with disability.



Support coordinators act as an organiser, facilitator, and advocate rolled into one. They understand the disability sector and handle the behind-the-scenes work so you can focus on what matters most.

What Does a Support Coordinator Actually Do?

A support coordinator wears many hats. There are many support coordinator roles and responsibilities, so here's what their day-to-day work can look like.

Connecting You With the Right Services

One of the biggest roles of support coordinators is linking you with the right providers for your situation. They help you find and compare multiple providers and service providers in your area, then assist in setting up agreements with the ones that suit you best.

Managing Communication With Providers

Support coordinators act as a go-between for you and your service providers. They negotiate service agreements, manage ongoing communication, and help you maintain relationships with your providers over time. This removes a lot of the back-and-forth that can become overwhelming.

Helping You Understand Your Plan

An NDIS plan can be hard to read. Support coordinators sit down with you, walk through each section of the participant's plan, and explain what NDIS funding you have and how to use it. They make sure nothing is left on the table.

Handling the Unexpected

The Three Levels of Support Coordination

Support connection is the entry-level tier. Support coordinators at this level help participants understand their NDIS plan and build confidence to manage their own plan with minimal ongoing help. The aim is to develop your knowledge of the NDIS so you feel comfortable getting started.

Level 2: Support Coordination

This is the most common level. Support coordinators at this tier help you connect with appropriate services, build provider relationships, and strengthen your ability to manage your own supports over time. The goal is to build your independence so you can eventually coordinate things on your own.


Your coordinator can also help you understand the difference between plan managed, self managed, and NDIS managed funding. They can connect you with a registered support coordinator or, where appropriate, an unregistered support coordinator depending on how your NDIS plan is set up.

Level 3: Specialist Support Coordination

Support coordination funding is separate from your other support line items. It sits in the Capacity Building budget of your NDIS plan.


The NDIS allocates funding at one of the three tiers based on your specific needs. Most participants are funded at Level 2. If your situation calls for it, you may be funded for a specialist support coordinator at Level 3 instead. Your funding level can change at plan reviews as your circumstances evolve.
